AT&T Improves Network Quality for iPhone Users

written by admin

In order to keep up with the ever increasing demand for data transfer and to manage the network strain that is particularly noticed, and caused, by iPhone users, AT&T in a press release stated that it has commenced new upgrades to its network to keep up with this huge demand.
The company is using 850MHz spectrum to beef up its 3G wireless network, which should help alleviate dropped calls and slow network connections for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S users. AT&T spokesman Mark Siegel told the blog Gearlog that the company is ready for the onslaught of new iPhone users.
Siegel says that upgrading equipment to allow AT&T to use its 850MHz spectrum for 3G services should help relieve some of the congestion issues. Because the 850MHz spectrum is at the low end of the frequency band, it is able to travel longer distances and penetrate walls more easily than signals on the 1900MHz band.
The problem has been particularly acute in large cities, such as New York and San Francisco, where there is a concentrated base of iPhone users and where the 1900MHz spectrum is predominant and these the company stated would be the starting point from which the change would be instituted.
In addition to adding 850MHz 3G service, AT&T has also been making other improvements to its network, such as upgrading to the next iteration of HSDPA technology, which is expected to double download speeds on AT&T’s network.
In a similar development, the company has announced the availability of a Navigator iPhone app that provides GPS-powered turn-by-turn navigation for the popular smartphone. The software comes with some intersting features including automatic content updates, speech recognition, traffic alerts, 3D maps, business listings, and trip planning. The application which requires iPhone OS 3.0 is available for a price tag of $9.99 per month.

Intel Enters CPU Deal with Nokia

written by admin

According to a report made available by Bloomber News, Intel is getting ready to announce a major breakthrough for its Atom CPUs – a deal with Nokia to develop mobile phones based on the chips.
Despite competition from rivals, Nokia is still the world’s largest mobile phone manufacturer and even if Intel only manages to get a small piece of Nokia’s business, it’s still a big deal, claimed Forward Concepts analyst Will Strauss.
In February, the chipmaker announced a partnership with LG Electronics, who will make smartphones based on future Intel Atom processors and Linux Moblin software. The following month, Intel announced collaboration with TSMC to manufacture Atom silicon. Many believe this is Intel’s attempt to lower its cost base and compete more readily with chipmakers using ARM-based technology who currently dominate the mobile phone market.
Rumors about a Nokia netbook or MID have been doing the rounds for a while. If the rumors are true, Intel is probably feeling pretty pleased with itself. The company has been trying to put its chips in mobile phones for ages and Nokia is one of the biggest cell phone manufacturers in the world.
