Palm has finally released its Pixi, a tiny, sleek webOS-based handset
is due on the Sprint network in time for the holidays. With a visible
full keyboard and rubberized back cover, Palm Pixi is especially handy
for extensive messaging and social networking.
The phone will hit shelves sans-WiFi (EV-DO Rev. A only here), with
8GB of storage onboard (a nice bump up from the rumored 4GB), 2
megapixel camera (with flash), a full QWERTY keyboard, and a minute,
2.63-inch, 320 x 400 capacitive display.
For starters, the phone is really quite handsome. In terms of
industrial design, the clean lines and smart choices in materials
belie the Pixi’s likely price-point. In your hands it feels solid,
though it’s shocking just how tiny it is. The standard backing is a
soft-touch material (not unlike the Touchstone back for the Pre), and
perhaps due to the lack of moving parts here, the phone feels really
well put together. Just as with the Pre, the Pixi includes a ringer on
/ off switch and 3.5mm headphone jack, as well as a removable 1150mAh
battery.
Overall, it’s definitely slimmer, lighter and more pocket-able than
the Pre. It has almost all the same features—no Wi-Fi won’t affect
your ability to download apps or music—so you’re not missing on that
much stuff if for some reason you choose the Pixi over the Pre.

According to a report by PCWorld, MarkSpace has announced the release of the Missing Sync for Palm Pre, Macintosh operating system version which is now available for purchase.
The Missing Sync for Palm Pre enables Pre users to transfer music, ringtones, photos, contact information, calendar data and other content between the Mac and the Palm Pre. The software works with Address Book, Entourage, iCal, iTunes, iPhoto and other familiar software.
Included is “Proximity Sync” technology that enables the two device to synchronize data over Wi-Fi, so you don’t need to physically tether the Pre to the Mac using USB to make the exchange happen.
You can pick up Missing Sync for Palm Pre (Mac version) from the Mark/Space online store for $40 as soon as it passes the beta stage.

Consolidating on its commitment to the security of its products and services, Palm has announced the release of webOS 1.0.2, a firmware update for the Palm Pre. This goes a long way o show that it takes all vulnerability disclosures seriously and has a process in place to work quickly to resolve them.
Palm notes that webOS 1.0.2 is a general bug fix release, containing many bugs fixes that would have held up the initial release to launch. As reported on the MyPre.com, the 67MB over-the-air download increases stability and adds a new alarm clock. Some users noted having to restore their devices from a Palm Profile backup after the update.
Similarly, Palm’s Dave Whalen (Vice President of Global Sales) mentioned last Friday that the Mojo SDK would, in fact, be arriving soon. What soon exactly means to Palm is unsure, since their definition of SDK is also not clear enough.

Recently, there has been a change in the management structure of Palm and this involves the appointment of former Apple executive responsible for Apple’s iPod division, Jon Rubinstein, as the company’s new CEO.
Colligan, a 16-year Palm veteran, helped steer the company through a wide range of challenges, and oversaw the development of the Pre and its accompanying operating system, webOS. Palm is hoping that the Pre and webOS will help it return to smartphone prominence in a market that is significantly more crowded than when the company introduced the Palm Pilot and Palm OS in the 1990s.
Palm said Colligan will take some time off and then join Elevation Partners, which took a 25 percent stake in Palm in 2007. News of Rubinstein’s appointment came on the heels of Palm’s launch on Saturday of its Pre, considered the company’s best chance to compete against Apple and its popular iPhone.

The Palm Pre is a new smartphone that is always thinking ahead to make your life easier. It comes with many features and functionality that can be found in a typical iPhone. It has an adaptable, easy-to-use
touch-screen interface although less intuitive than most iPhone nevertheless it adds a number of refinements and features the iPhone, at least for now, sorely lacks, such as the ability to run multiple
applications at one time, a built-in flash for its camera and a universal search.

Stubbier than the iPhone, the Pre has a 3.1in touch-screen with many of the same capacitive interface features as Apple’s multi-touch device. It also has a small, slide-out Qwerty keyboard, which is compact but effective, yet perhaps not quite as easy to type on as a BlackBerry and BlackBerry fans might gripe about.
The Pre features a great innovation called Synergy, which combines data from multiple sources. The most interesting use of this feature is in the Pre’s address book. You can link your Pre to contacts stored
in your company’s Exchange server, your friend list in Facebook and addresses stored on a Google account. If you have a friend whose contact information is stored in more than one of those sources, Synergy will automatically combine that data into one listing.
Overall, the Pre is an accomplished smartphone, with an intuitive interface, an excellent operating system, and plenty of bells and whistles to recommend it as a possible iPhone alternative to consumers. It is available for a price tag of $200 starting from this month.

Palm has just announced their latest and greatest smartphone, the Palm Pre and it is the first of several mobile devices to run WebOS. The software, according to Palm, was designed from the get-go to be “constantly connected to the Web.” It’s based on a battery of Web standards: CSS, XHTML, and Javascript, meaning it’s immediately familiar and accessible to Web developers.

At 2.4 x 4.0 x 0.7 inches, the Pre is slightly small and the 4.76-ounce phone offers a more cramped thumb-oriented QWERTY keyboard. The design appears sleek especially with keyboards extended. In
addition, the Pre offers design innovations like a “gesture area” underneath the screen where one can swipe and flip away at the UI without obscuring the screen.

Palm Pre has a 3.1-inch display with 320-by-480-pixel resolution. It features a 3.0 megapixel camera and built-in GPS, 8G flash storage. WebOS will run and keep open multiple applications, and lets users
instantly flip from one to the other. Notifications or alerts are handled via a scrolling notifications bar at the bottom of the Pre’s touchscreen: You can respond to the notice at once or leave it until
later.

Another interesting feature is the Synergy, a synchronization program that automatically pulls contact information from sites like Facebook, Google and Outlook, organizes it and creates a single listing in the
Pre. The phone also offers a consolidated instant-messaging feature from multiple IM services.
Pre will be available exclusively via Sprint in the first half of this year. Pricing is yet to be disclosed.
